In 2008 we were lucky enough to be chosen by Genesis Energy to be included in their School Gen Programme. At the beginning of 2009 we saw 2-kilowatt photovoltaic system (solar panels) installed on the roof of our school.

We launched this programme with a big celebration and a School Gen performance. We were lucky enough to have a special visit from the Minister for the Environment, Dr Nick Smith.

Like Genesis Energy, we believe it is important for for all New Zealanders to learn about renewable energy technologies. It is with Genesis Energy's generous support that we are able to generate and monitor our own sun powered energy supply.

We are an Enviroschool

Generating our own electricity isn't all that we do to support our environment. We are also proud to be a part of the Enviroschool / Kura Taiao Programme.

"The Enviroschool / Kura Taiao Programme is about the well-being of the whole school, community and eco-system. It’s about working out how to live so that our society and economy nourishes the natural systems that give us life. Enviroschools gives young people an opportunity to explore real life challenges and to apply their abundance of energy and ideas. " (source)

Alongside the Solar Panels on our roof, we have planted an eco garden, established a recycling programme, installed a worm farm and have planted native trees on our embankment. We are committed to teaching sustainable practices and give students every opportunity to have hands on experiences at creating their own sustainable community.

Learn more about Sam Judd - a former CTMS student, and his charity organisation Sustainable Coastlines
"We love our coasts and we work with our sleeves rolled up to keep them beautiful. We coordinate and support large-scale coastal clean-up events, riparian planting projects, schools educational roadshows, public awareness campaigns and other projects aimed at protecting and sustaining our coastlines. Through these projects we motivate volunteers and communities around Aotearoa / New Zealand and the Pacific to look after the coastlines we all love. "
